Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga continues to hog the limelight in the National Women’s Super League in the United States (US) when she scored her 13th goal of the season on Monday.

However, it was bitter sweet for Chawinga as Kansas City Current suffered their second consecutive defeat in the league after a 4-1 loss to Washington Spirit.

Chawinga is the leading goal scorer in the USWL in her debut season, one goal above Zambian striker Barbara Banda.

According to Kansas website, Chawinga scored the consolation in the 64th minute when midfielder Debinha played a through ball before the Malawian powered through a Washington defender and finished the one-on-one opportunity.

“The goal marked Chawinga’s 13 goal of the regular season and she now sits just two goals behind midfielder Lo’eau La Bontha for the most regular season goals in club history,” Kansas website reported.

In an interview Tuesday, Chawinga said she was disappointed with the loss.

“We will come back stronger. It is part of football but we will not lose hope,” she said.

Chawinga has taken the US women’s league by storm in her debut season and she is a hot golden boot award contender.

Lovemore Fazili

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili was also impressed with the performance of foreign country-based players.

“I am happy that all the players abroad are having game time,” Fazili said.

The loss means Kansas have lost grip in the title race as they trail leaders Orlando Pride by six points.

Pride have 41 points from 17 matches whereas Kansas have 35 points from the same number of matches.

Last season, Temwa scored 53 goals for both club and country while playing for Chinese giants Wuhan Jiangda. She won three golden boot awards in China.
