Celebrated rapper Tay Grin popularly known as Nyau King was on Tuesday unveiled as the Malawi Tourism Council ambassador.
As the ambassador, the ‘2 by 2’ star, who has been vibrant, marketing Malawi to the world through music, is geared to promote the country’s tourism.
Tay Grin, who last year bagged the Best African International Cultural Ambassador Award at the African Achievement Awards in the United States, will continue the drive to share Malawi’s culture with the world through music. Speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Lilongwe, the artist said he was honoured to be recognised as the ambassador.
“As the ambassador, I will work hand in hand with the Malawi Tourism Council and the government to propel the country’s tourism,” the ‘Tola’ and ‘Lubwa’ star said. He added: “We will collaborate with international artists who are also doing well in their countries, so that they can come down here and appreciate our rich culture.”
The artist said that his music will act as an awareness tool for tourists to come to Malawi and “appreciate our culture.” MTC chairperson Justin Dzinkambani said Tay Grin deserves this role “because he is a well-known artist both locally and internationally.”
“Using celebrities like musicians will allow people to know what Malawi has on offer in terms of tourist attractions. This is just the beginning, we will have ambassadors like footballers to encourage people from other countries to travel to Malawi,” Dzinkambani said.
He said bringing Tay Grin on board will attract more people from other countries who love his music to visit Malawi. In 2023, Tay Grin, who had performances in USA and United Kingdom last year, got nominated for the Destination Promotion Individual Award in the MTC Awards. The signing ceremony was attended by tourism players both local and international.
