Stakeholders back MEC on system audit stance

Electoral stakeholders have backed the Malawi Electoral Commission for disallowing an independent audit of the Electoral Management System (EMS).

The remarks follow a decision by the commission to decline a request from some opposition political parties to have the EMS audited by an independent entity.

The political parties, which include the former ruling DPP, PP, UTM, and also AFORD, argued that the system has flaws that could compromise the integrity of the September 16 elections.

However, according to the MEC, the scope raised by the parties does not point to any irregularities, hence the rejection.

Meanwhile, the opposition DPP has described the rejection as disappointing.

In reaction, Unandi Banda, Executive Director of the National Elections Systems Trust, commended the commission for safeguarding the security of the system.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Banda advised political parties to work with the commission in holding a fair and credible election.
