Solomonic Peacocks, which runs the Easter Theatre Festival, has started village performances under the Global Theatre Market Connection initiative.
This is a project which is funded by Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) through the Copyright Fund to the tune of K10 million.
Solomonic Peacocks Director McArthur Matukuta said the Global Theatre Market Connection was aimed at linking with people as well as disseminating messages through theatre, comedy and dance.
Matukuta said they were excited that their first outing—at Nasiyaya, Traditional Authority Somba, in Blantyre on Saturday—attracted good patronage.
“People turned up for the performances and it showed that there is hunger for such activities in rural areas.
“We, artists, should not only focus on urban areas,” he said.
Matukuta said there were a number of activities they would be running ahead of the Easter Theatre Festival, citing directing and script writing workshops for artists.
The audience sampled theatre, comedy and traditional dances served by Dikamawoko Arts, Chiphwanya and Sasoka and Namasani Drama Group, respectively.
There was also poetry that came from Hudson Chamasowa.
Solomonic Peacocks will hold the sixth edition of Easter Theatre Festival from April 25 through to April 27 2024.
