National Bank of Malawi (NBM) has donated K11 million towards this year’s Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Cross Country Competition.
The competition is scheduled for today at Mzuzu Golf Course with about 230 runners set to battle for glory.
The athletes have been drawn from all MDF units across the country.
The competition aims at identifying outstanding athletes who will take part in the senior category of national cross country competition.
NBM Mzuzu Service Centre Bank Manager Samson Mzungu said the bank values what MDF is doing in providing security to the entire nation.
Mzungu said the donation also demonstrates the bank’s commitment to strengthening the relationship between it and MDF.
“Such competitions promote interaction among our soldiers and also support their health, which is our concern. Therefore, we will continue supporting sports and other sectors because we value MDF’s support to the bank,” Mzungu said.
MDF Chief of Training, Brigadier General Luke Yetala, commended the bank for supporting their K39 million budget for the entire competition.
Yatala then encouraged other companies to support sporting activities in MDF.
“These activities are not just meant for entertainment. They also help in enhancing our operations as MDF. These competitions are very important because they help our soldiers to learn about teamwork.
“The physical exercises are very vital to our lives as soldiers. Besides that, this cross country competition will also help to prepare our athletes for both national and international competitions,” Yetala said.
MDF Technical Advisor for Sports, Captain John Kaputa, said the best athletes that will be spotted at the competition will go straight into camp to start preparing for national competitions.
Kaputa said their target is to win more medals at national competitions in senior categories.
“All the 230 athletes will be tested on their capabilities to perform. We want to dominate all national competitions. Our focus is on the cross country competition which is coming ahead of us soon,” he said.
Both female and male athletes will compete in a 10 kilometres race with civilians also being allowed to participate.
However, they will not be given medals if they win.
