Ministry of Sports is waiting for a technical report from Team Malawi to establish factors that led to the team’s early exit from the 2024 Paris Olympics in France.
Team Malawi, comprising athlete Asimenye Simwaka and two swimmers Tayamika Changanamuno and Felipe Gomes, was booted out of the race in the early stages.
Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson MacMillan Mwale said the technical report would help them make an informed decision.
“We will wait for the team’s return and report on what has happened in order to make an informed comment,” Mwale said.
Mwale said recently the ministry called for a meeting of stakeholders, who included Malawi National Council of Sport, to discuss what leads to poor performance on the international stage and possible solutions.
“Key issues that came out were low funding, poor preparations, lack of capacity among sports officials and lack of athlete development plans, among others. Meanwhile we are working on strategies to address the challenges,” he said.
Gomes was the first member of Team Malawi to be knocked out of the 50 metres freestyle swimming race.
Then the focus shifted to Simwaka, who exited the competition on Friday in the first round, having earlier impressed in the preliminary round.
Finally, Changanamuno followed the exit door after failing to meet the grade in 50 metres freestyle.
