I will save Malawi, Peter Mutharika tells Blantyre Synod clerics

Former president Peter Mutharika has urged Malawians to join him in the fight to save Malawi from its current challenges.

Mutharika says he will improve and rebuild the country once he gets elected in the September elections.

He made the remarks Friday at his house in Mangochi when he hosted religious leaders from Blantyre Synod of the Church of the Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP).

The Democratic Progressive Party leader said he took heed of calls for him to stand again and seek re-election so that he can help Malawi.

“I am not standing to prove any point but to make things work for a lot of Malawians who are currently struggling. Many Malawians are suffering every day and I cannot sit and watch the country being destroyed further,” he said.

According to Mutharika, Malawi’s economy is in a bad state now because of mismanagement.

He, therefore, challenged Malawians to rise to the occasion and join him in the fight to save the country through the September elections.

“It is not a one-man fight. It needs collective efforts to save the country. I felt I had done my best [during his presidency], but let me assure you that we will improve and develop the country after winning the elections in September,” he said.

In his remarks, former secretary general of the Blantyre Synod of the CCPP Reverend Benson Alex Maulana commended Mutharika for agreeing to contest again.

Maulana said Mutharika has come out of his retirement so that he can save Malawi from sinking further.

“You could have chosen to go and stay outside the country. But you are here for a reason, which is to save Malawians. Be assured of our support, prayers and we are glad that you accepted to stand again and serve Malawians,” he said.

Over 65 pastors attended the meeting which started with a church service.

Mutharika was Malawi’s president from 2014 to 2020.
