Michael Usi avoids UTM sticky issues

By Isaac Salima:

UTM acting president Michael Usi Tuesday addressed party followers on arrival in Blantyre from Lilongwe.

He was, however, mum on party issues.

Usi, who is also State Vice President, is in the commercial city for official duties.

UTM supporters flocked to Kameza Round-about to welcome him.

However, in his five-minute speech, Usi centred his message on assuring people that he would ensure that he fulfils former State vice president the late Saulos Chilima’s vision.

“I know that if we do not serve the people well, you will be insulting me when passing through here. I know that people are suffering out there and look up to us to address their challenges,” Usi said.

The veep also promised people that they would get cash and food support to cushion them from hunger.

“You will also benefit from government loans [which are] being provided by Neef [National Economic Empowerment Fund]. I have discussed this with the State President [Lazarus Chakwera] and you will get the loans between this month and next month,” he said.

He, however, avoided sticky issues. For instance, some senior party members recently announced that they were parting ways with Tonse partners.

Usi said he would not focus on those who speak ill about him but, instead, concentrate on serving Malawians.

Chakwera appointed Usi as State Vice President after Chilima died in a plane crash in Chikangawa Forest on June 10 2024.

Renowned UTM gurus were not available to welcome Usi Tuesday.
