Mec gears for voter transfer exercise

By Mphatso M’bang’ombe:

The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has said it is ready to conduct voter transfer exercises.

It says this will ensure that all registered voters cast ballots even when they relocate from their original registration centres.

Mec Central Regional Elections Manager Esimy Chisepeya made the remarks at a training session for elections management device (EMD) operators.

The training took place in Mponela, Dowa District.

“We are more than geared for the exercise, which is scheduled to run from February 25 to 27 this year.

“We did voter registration and, after voter registration, some people have moved to other areas because of transfers due to work-related reasons, with others changing location due to other reasons. The voters’ transfer exercise will accord them an opportunity to update their location status and vote on elections’ day,” Chisepeya said.

Chisepeya then urged EMD operators to be professional.

“The commission cannot afford to compromise on the integrity of the electoral processes due to negligence or immaturity,” Chisepeya said.

One of the EMD operators, William Sikenala, said they were up to the task.

“We will always follow instructions made by the commission,” Sikenala said.
