By Witness Chipwere:
The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) has surpassed its blood collection target for the Northern Region, collecting 23,564 pints of blood against the goal of 20,000.
Statistics indicate that during the 2022-23 period, MBTS collected 13,951 pints of blood while in 2023-24, the quantity increased to 23,564 pints.
The service says surpassing the target indicates effective community engagement and awareness, highlighting the importance of local participation in blood donation drives.
MBTS spokesperson Mphatso Bazale said blood donations could significantly impact healthcare service provision, especially in times of emergencies.
Bazale added that strengthening partnerships with organisations, schools and business entities could enhance outreach efforts and encourage more people to donate the life-saving liquid.
“Exceeding the 20,000 pint target reflects a strong commitment to public health and it sets a positive precedent for future initiatives in blood donation. The blood targets are always moving targets because the population is growing and, at the same time, cases of road accidents are happening,” Bazale said.
On his part, quality health advocate Maziko Matemba implored Malawians and residents of Malawi to be donating blood.
“Otherwise, it is good news that MBTS has surpassed its target,” he said.
