The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority-MACRA has announced an ambitious plan of establishing a smartphone assembly line in the country.
MACRA Director General Daudi Suleiman made the announcement in Mzuzu during a National Youth Conversation Series 3 which was part of commemorating the 2024 International Youth Day.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Suleiman, noted that the penetration of digital technologies in the country is very low a development he attributed to high cost of smart devices as well as high internet cost.
This far, Suleman has the said the authority is planning to establish an assembly line where imported parts of smartphones will be assembled in the country so as to reduce the high cost of the said gadgets which is a result of high taxes imposed on such devices.
Meanwhile, the ministry of education through its director of science, technology and innovation Associate professor Chomora Mikeka said in an effort to improve online connectivity of schools and enhance digital skills among learners, government has received a grant that will see about two thousand schools connected to the internet through the second phase of the Digital Malawi Accelerator Project.
