Malawi Beach Soccer team stumbles in Afcon

Malawi Beach Soccer National Football Team has failed to reach the group stages of the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations after losing 6-1 to Senegal at Hurghada Beach Soccer Arena in Egypt Monday.

It was a second successive loss for Malawi as they lost narrowly to Mozambique 4-3 on Sunday.

Coach Willy Kumilambe made only one change to the team that lost to Mozambique, with Sandram Ussi replacing Martin Biliati.

Senegal were leading 1-0 at the end of the first period before scoring four goals to lead comfortably 5-0 at the end of the second period.

Malawi pulled one back in the third period but by then Senegal had done enough to secure maximum points having lost to Mauritania 5-3 on Saturday.

Malawi will conclude the group stages when they face Mauritania today.

The team qualified for the Afcon Beach Soccer finals after beating Burundi 15-14 on aggregate.

Malawi is making its second appearance at the Afcon finals having finished sixth at the 2022 held in Vilankulo, Mozambique.

During the 2022 edition, Malawi lost 4-2 to Mozambique and 7-3 to Morocco in the group stages.

In position five/sixth play-off, Malawi lost 4-1 to Uganda on post-match penalties after a 6-6 stalemate.
