Lazarus Chakwera consoles Catholic bishops over Saulos Chilima death

President Lazarus Chakwera Tuesday condoled with Catholic bishops over the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima, who died alongside former first lady Patricia Shanil Dzimbiri and seven others in a plane crash in Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba District, on June 10.

Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe Tuesday, Chakwera told members of the Permanent Council of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) that Chilima, who was a member of the Catholic Church, was committed both to the development of the church as well as that of the country.

According to Chakwera, Chilima was a man of faith, as manifested through the testimonies of speakers and clerks at events leading to his funeral and burial services.

He told the bishops that Chilima made indelible contributions to the development of Malawi, such that his contributions cannot be erased.

The Malawi leader assured the Catholic Church of the government’s continued support even after the death of Chilima.

In his remarks, ECM President Archbishop George Desmond Tambala said the Catholic Church will continue to pray for Malawi as well as the nine bereaved families affected by the plane crash.

Tambala was accompanied by Bishop Montfort Stima of Mangochi Diocese, who is also ECM Vice President, Bishop Peter Musikuwa of Chikwawa Diocese, Bishop Peter Chifukwa of Dedza Diocese and ECM Secretary General Father Valeriano Mtseka.

Earlier, Chakwera met members of the Evangelical Association of Malawi, who visited the palace to condole with him in the wake of the Malawi Defence Force plane crash.
