Kalimba Band seeks to revive past feats

Veteran musician Vita Chirwa, who leads Kalimba Band— which is famous for hits such as ‘Sometimes I Wonder’— has said the group wants to relight its glory days by staging more performances across the country.

The band has not been active, in terms of live performances, until recently when it entertained fun lovers at Aero Lounge in Lilongwe, a venue that also hosted Blantyre-based Makasu Band three weeks ago.

“The landscape has changed, especially with young people dominating with other genres, but there is still a big gap for live music like what we do. In those days, we had so many resident bands as well as live performances and, so, we want to do such things,” Chirwa said.

He said despite making headlines in the past, Kalimba Band remains a force to be reckoned with in the music circles in the country.

“The base was already laid by the generation that started Kalimba and the euphoria built through the songs that they released is still there—and strong for that matter. We want to maintain this excitement,” Chirwa, who is also Musicians Union of Malawi leader, said.

He also said their recent performances, where they blended old and new songs while maintaining their signature sound, culminated in people calling for more of their songs and performances. “Kalimba is a band that has stood the test of time.

It has endured over 40 years. It is interesting to see that people are still there to enjoy our music in songs such as ‘Mkazi Wachingoni’, ‘Agogo’ and ‘Too Many Rains ago’,” Chirwa said.

Kalimba has showed its seriousness in keeping itself on the market by releasing an Extended Playlist titled Past and Present.
