Firebrand politician and activist Jessie Kabwila—after wandering in the “political wilderness” for more than half a decade and secretly returning “home” at Malawi Congress Party (MCP) where she was “warmly welcomed”, “forgiven” and later re-awarded the position of Publicity Secretary at the just ended convention in Lilongwe—has come guns blazing, vowing to help spearhead a collective campaign to maintain MCP in power on the basis of “delivery”.
Kabwila, a former UTM Party member who later served as Chief Executive Officer at Malawi School of Government-Lilongwe campus, surprised many people when she garnered 857 votes at MCP’s convention over the weekend, defeating Ezekiel Ching’oma.
Speaking excitedly after emerging victorious, Kabwila said she will collaborate with everyone to ensure that MCP wins with a landslide during the next general election, based on policies and evidence of improving the livelihoods of Malawians.
“We are winning the hearts of people by showing the evidence of what we are doing.
“Our politics speaks to the people. It is not politics of bullying, of fraud. Ours will be a knockout win on the basis of how we are changing the lives of the people.
“We are delivering to the poor, particularly women. Ours is a leadership that makes sure that the poor are not only well represented but they are also participating and making decisions”.
Commenting on her surprise comeback to MCP, from “nowhere”, Kabwila said her gesture means she believes in the MCP family and owe it to them to stick it out no matter what happens.
“So, I must be there. MCP brought me to Parliament, introduced me to the power and recognition I have.
“I have understood and shown people that a position of mine is not because of how intelligent I am. Delegates decided to put party goals ahead, put differences aside and roped me in to help the party.
“This maturity is what is allowing me to be humble and say I am grateful. When I said I am sorry, they did not just say yes. They even rewarded me with a position I know to serve well”.
