Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has registered a decrease in television and broadcasting rights in the just-ended year.
According to a budget document, the association generated K80.6 million from television and broadcasting rights in 2024, having pocketed K153.5 million in 2023.
But Fam Commercial Manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe said the association was expected to release updated figures soon.
“The budget document which was shared is as of November 30 2024 and does not reflect our financial year, January to December.
“Our finance team is currently preparing for an audit and we can only comment [on the issue] once the audit report is out,” Mwenelupembe said.
The association has projected that it would generate K189.4 million through television and broadcasting rights next season, scheduled to start in March.
Sports analyst George Kaudza-Masina said the figure was likely to increase after the audit report.
“If we look at matches in the just-ended season, I am sure the authorities generated a lot of money through broadcasting rights,” he said.
Fam President Fleetwood Haiya recently announced that the association was reviewing the Mpira TV setup, targeting 133 percent revenue increase.
The current Mpira TV model has not benefitted Super League teams, as they receive peanuts at the end of the season.
In 2022, Fam generated K123 million in broadcasting rights, out of which K61.1 million was total expenses whereas K21.1 million was net revenue.
Apart from a decline in broadcasting rights, Fam generated K52.2 million from Flames replica jerseys last year, having pocketed K280.1 million in 2023.
Fam attributed the drop in revenue to lack of new stock on the market last year.
