Youthful musician Emmie Deebo on Sunday scooped the Best New female Artist Award in the 2025 Africa Arts and Entertainment Awards (AAEA) held in Kenya.

The artist wrote on her social media page that she was excited to have won the award for Malawi. “This is not for me but for Malawi. I would like to thank all fans for voting,” the artist, who did not attend the awards ceremony, said.

Her award was received by the Malawi High Commissioner to Tanzania, Benson Ojesi. The maker of tracks such as ‘Chilipo’ and Sheli Banana’ over the weekend performed in two gigs in South Africa. Her manager Laurent Kwakwala said the award underlined the strides the artist had made.

“This is her second international recognition and it is no mean achievement. She has really worked hard to build her brand and, at the same time, strive for quality in her work,” Kwakwala said.

The award follows her being named ambassador by American Literacy Foundation called FUNetix Free Literacy recently.

The artist is expected to work with other ambassadors from South Africa to promote a reading programme which is targeting children.
