Dr Joram sets out to spark conversations

Singer and guitarist Dr Joram Nyirongo has described music and art as a tool for conveying powerful messages and sparking revolutions.

The Lilongwe-based musician, who is also a medical doctor, is famed for songs such as ‘Mr Politician’, in which he takes a swipe at politicians for failing to fulfill their promises once elected into positions. With three albums to his acclaim, namely Some Serious Decisions, 1987 and Proudly African, the artist has dropped a new track titled ‘Sona.’

“I wrote ‘Sona’ recently. I am personally very concerned that we have people living in grass thatched houses without electricity, drinking water from rivers and yet the West is conquering the skies by sending rockets with the hope of colonising mars,” Dr Joram said.

“This blatant disparity between the West and us is concerning. And so the song seeks to raise a conversation that will spark practical solutions,” he added. Dr Joram said ‘Sona’, just like ‘Mr Politician’, was inspired by the political climate and blatant underdevelopment to which no one was blind. Dr Joram said with ‘Sona’ on the market, he was working on a project and that, ahead of it, he would be releasing a series of songs.

“The break I had came because I had professional pursuits in medicine,” he said. The artist said he sings on matters that are of concern to the country. “We all want to see the country prosper. And, so, these conversations and revolutions transcend party politics or tribal divisions. These conversations are necessary every day, for we all would like to see change,” he said.
