The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has released its final report on the June 10, 2024, plane crash in Nkhatabay, which killed Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others.

According to Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu, the bureau has briefed the victims’ families in Lilongwe on the final report today.

Chilima died in the crash.

Kunkuyu told MIJ Online that the BFU has published the findings on its website.

The investigation found that the accident occurred because the crew flew into bad weather, where pilots were required to rely on instruments instead of their eyes.

In its interim report, the bureau had recommended that Malawi’s Defense Minister must ensure military aircraft have working emergency locator transmitters, and the Transport Minister must improve navigation aid updates for pilots.

Meanwhile, the bureau has made four additional recommendations, which include that the civil aviation authority must ensure that radar data and radio traffic are recorded, and that the commander of the Malawi Defense Force should ensure that aero-medical data of its flight crew members are up to date.

Additionally, the Malawi Air Force should ensure that a high level of aviation safety is maintained in the operations of the transport aircraft team.

In an interview, Kunkuyu urged the public to access the full report online.
