Reserve Bank of Malawi former governor Dalitso Kabambe, who is also aspiring UTM Party president, has observed that most university graduates of the old generation have failed to develop the country.
Kabambe has since urged university students to aim at making a positive impact once they graduate.
He made the remarks during a public lecture which he held at DMI University in Mangochi on Friday.
It was held under the theme ‘Harnessing Malawi’s Democratic Dividend: The Role of The Youth in Economic Growth and Development’.
“Malawi is a youthful nation as over 75 percent of its citizens are below the age of 35.
“But these youths have not been serviced well by graduates of the old generation, who are failing to create employment for the youth,” he said.
Kabambe said the September 16 2025 Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections present youths with the opportunity to vote into power people who have proven expertise to advance the economic revolution agenda of the country.
“If you don’t vote next year, it means you will allow [members of] the older generation to decide your future again. The problems which Malawi is facing can be solved within 18 months only, more so because we know where things have gone wrong,” Kabambe said.
He faulted the current administration for failing to govern the country properly, saying this had culminated in suffering for the majority of Malawians.
In his remarks, DMI University Deputy Vice Chancellor Benedicto Okoma-atani Malunga hailed the public lecture, saying it opened the eyes of students at the institution.
Malunga said this was the first public lecture to be held at the university since its establishment, hence he suggested the need for such engagements so that the country could be producing graduates who could be competitive on the market.
