Seasoned culturist and broadcaster Dyson Gonthi has resurfaced and is set to launch a rural welfare arts organisation called DyGo Foundation on Saturday  at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Gonthi, well-known for his roles in radio programmes on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Radio one such as Kalondolondo and Nzeru Nkupangwa, said the foundation wants to help people in rural areas to showcase their talents.

“We want people in the rural areas to come out and showcase their talents. There is talent out there in music, dance, theatre and visual arts but many lack platforms to showcase this talent,” he said.

Gonthi, who has in the past years also led a troupe, said the free-of-charge launch will be spiced up by different activities including music.

He also said that during the launch, they will also have interactive workshops to share ideas and insights on enhancing arts and culture in the rural areas.

Gonthi, who is also a playwright, said the foundation will be vibrant holding talent competitions in various disciplines with winners set to walk away with different prizes.

“We also want to use the foundation to look at organising shows in order to raise funds to help the needy. We just want to call upon people to come through and be part of the launch,” he said.

At 83 years old, Gonthi, who is passionate about arts and culture, said they also want to take a lead role in unearthing talent in rural areas.

The veteran cultural activist’s passion for arts and culture dates back to 1964, when, as a form three student at Robert Blake Secondary School in Dowa District, he staged a play titled The Coming.
