Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) and Film Association of Malawi (Fama) on Monday discussed issues that included the distribution of royalties and copyright during a meeting held in Lilongwe.
Cosoma spokesperson Catherine Mitungwi said yesterday that there had been a misunderstanding regarding the distribution of royalties, including blank media levy, hence the meeting.
“We will be distributing royalties this month and have agreed that we proceed. The forthcoming January distribution shall be informed by a consolidation of data collected by the secretariat, with a special consideration of data collected by [those engaged in] the survey [that was] jointly conducted by some representatives of producers and Cosoma,” Mitungwi said.
Of late, some members have been petitioning the copyright body.
“We emphasised the need to hold sensitisation programmes, especially distribution using Titles Specific Method, for blank media levy and also about copyright,” Mitungwi said.
She said the meeting cleared that the December 9 2024 meeting did not agree to stop or suspend the title-specific distribution model.
Kingston, who recently appointed advisers and members of a marketing committee, described the meeting as important to the creative industry.
“The meeting was all about discussing key issues affecting our industry. Cosoma, as a body responsible for the distribution of royalties on behalf of authors, composers and producers, is vital in our affairs. We appreciate their efforts in promoting and protecting the rights of creatives,” she said.
Kingston has assured members that she would raise the bar of the association and that she would work tirelessly to make sure that their works get proper recognition on the market.
