Commission unveils innovation portal

By Wezzie Gausi:

The National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) Tuesday unveiled its newly established innovation portal, designed for innovators across the country to showcase their technologies.

The national innovation portal is a platform that aims to bridge the gap between research and industry, fostering a dynamic environment for collaboration and the commercialisation of groundbreaking ideas.

Speaking at the portal system validation workshop in Lilongwe, NCST Research, Science and Technology Manager Mike Kachedwa said the portal has been created to address challenges faced in effectively disseminating research results to end users.

Kachedwa added that the portal would help the world recognise that Malawi possesses a wealth of innovations and what is needed is a platform for individuals to showcase their talents.

“Using this portal, one can explore a treasure trove of promising innovations ready for market introduction.

“The portal provides valuable insights into current industry demands, allowing users to tailor solutions to societal needs for maximum impact,” Kachedwa said.

He added that the portal facilitates direct communication between researchers and potential investors or collaborators, fostering the formation of powerful partnerships.

“Through the portal, you can pose your toughest technological problems and unlock the potential of collaborative innovation within a vibrant community,” Kachedwa said.

Mzuzu Entrepreneurs Hub Resource Mobilisation Officer Vincent Mbisa applauded NCST for the portal.

Mbisa pointed out the need to popularise the portal among people, especially those in rural areas.

“We need to bring this portal to the public sphere so that the masses are aware of it. Failure to do so may mean that the innovation will not fulfil its intended purpose.

“It is also our hope that the portal will be linked to accredited academic institutions, enabling students to showcase their talents,” Mbisa said.

Meanwhile, innovators, companies and funders have been urged to open accounts on the portal, as it allows innovators to showcase their technologies and attract partners and investors.
