Civic Centre in Blantyre on Saturday experienced the beauty of singing when choirs shared the stage to tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ in a Citywide Inter-denominational Christmas Cantata 2024.
Organised by Blantyre Joint Choir in partnership with Blantyre City Council, the Christmas Cantata turned out to be a proper warm-up ahead of Christmas and New Year festivities.
Patronised by Blantyre City Mayor Councillor Joseph Makwinja, the choirs unified to sing with joy.
One of the people who have served Blantyre Joint Choir for years, Joshua Chienda, dared choirs to use Christmas Cantata to present the correct story of the birth of Jesus Christ, which, he observed, has a lot of distortions.
“I have enjoyed the moment. The biggest challenge that has been there is that people do not come out to be part of Christmas Cantata,” Chienda said.
Blantyre Joint Choir Chairperson Florence Gonani said it was an honour for them in that, in the history of the choir, it was the first time they were holding the Christmas Cantata in such a format.
“It was all about bringing the Christmas story into one message. Our celebration in song and dance today is in honour of the wonderful truth, for unto us a child is born. I hope that the child, who is Jesus Christ, has been born anew in our hearts,” Gonani said.
Blantyre Joint Choir was established in the 1970s as an arm of the ecumenical church in Blantyre and beyond.
Over the years, the choir has sought to play its role as the organ of the churches in spreading the word of God.
Apart from Blantyre Joint Choir, the other groups that performed during Christmas Cantata included Mpachika Youth Fellowship Choir, Anglican Joint Choir and Ndirande Kachere CCAP Choir.
