Britain calls for peace in Malawi ahead of elections

The British High Commission has stressed on the need for strong leadership and condemned political violence in the lead-up to the country’s general elections.

The remarks made during a reception at the British High Commissioner’s residence to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty King Charles.

Speaking to MIJ Online Fiona Ritchie Outgoing British High Commissioner to Malawi said that strong leadership is vital for Malawi’s future.

Ritchie also expressef the need for Malawians to feel safe and exercise their democratic right at the ballot box on 16th September.

Ritchie also stressed on the importance of economic stability, particularly for private sector growth in key areas such as agriculture, energy and mining.

Ritchie: There’s need for strong leadership.

She noted that investing in productive commercial agriculture is essential for the country’s development and that tourism and mining offer promising opportunities.

And on her part, Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wilima, expressed the government’s commitment to maintain peace before, during and after the elections.

Wilima assured that the government will do everything in its power to ensure that the peace that prevails in the country is not disturbed.
