Self Development

A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business (Henry Ford).

A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business (Henry Ford).

Some months ago I ordered some kaftans for my shop and when they finally arrived I noticed that they had not been sewn properly and so I decided to contact the supplier. The supplier confirmed that she had noticed the protruding threads on the kaftans but this woman made it clear that there was nothing she could do about it because she was simply selling them as she received them from her supplier. I knew that this woman was in business to make nothing else other than money so I thanked her and took the kaftans to a tailor who sewed them properly before I eventually took them to the shop. That was definitely my first and last time dealing with her. Who would want to do business with a person who only thought of themselves?

Weeks later I bought some pairs of ladies shoes and when they arrived I noticed that the glue wasn't properly put and this made the bottom part and the upper part of the shoes separate. I quickly called the supplier who apologized and mentioned that she would inform her supplier. Apart from that, she refunded me the full amount and I asked if I should send the shoes back to which she refused and told me to keep because sending them would be another expense. This is a person who was no only in business to simply make money but to make a difference. These are the people who think beyond money and put purpose first.

Many are in business simply because they want to only make money even if it means destroying other people's lives. That is why we have people who don't care what happens to their customers after using their harmful products. Many only think about making money today instead of providing a great service and build great relationships that will result in repeat sales and countless referrals. Many think short term especially when things are going well.

They are tempted to think things will continue going well but no matter how good one is at something or how well a product is selling, there will always come a time when things will feel stagnant and product sales eventually start to decline especially when all you think about is the money and care less about your customers.

Short term thinkers usually fail to see this coming and panic when it happens while long term thinkers aim to stretch the sales of their current products as much as they while investing in research for next products so that should the current product sales decline, they already would have thought of their next product. In a world that is always improving, one must always be thinking of improving or they will be left out.

The truth is that money will naturally follow when your business solves a genuine need and makes a positive difference. It is therefore important to prioritize purpose so as to build a sustainable venture that thrives beyond just financial gains. Stop thinking small. Create a legacy that inspires and leaves a lasting impact on the world.
