Tea Association of Malawi Limited (Taml) has reiterated its commitment to a safe working environment for all workers in the industry.
In an interview, Taml Chairperson Sangwani Hara said the sector is committed to the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) framework agreed upon by all stakeholders to ensure a safer working environment in the sector.
Hara was commenting on an inspection tour of some tea estates in the southern region by minister of labour Vitumbiko Mumba.
“We informed the minister that risk assessments conducted within the sector, come up with a list of equipment to be used in each value chain, so based on that assessment, workers are assigned the type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) they need for their safety,” Hara said.
During his inspection tour, Mumba advised tea estates to comply with labour laws.
“Respect and abide by the laws and regulations of Malawi and make sure that you improve the working standards of employees,” Mumba said.
The tea sector is the second largest formal employer after the government, providing direct job opportunities to over 60,000 Malawians.
The sector also engages 23,000 smallholder farming families apart from being the second top most foreign exchange earner after tobacco
