Paragon Arts, a theatre group, on Wednesday held a one-day training session at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe aimed at addressing post-abortion care through flash mob theatre.
Eight theatre outfits within Lilongwe participated in the training whose project was launched in November last year and runs up to January 31 2025.
The training equipped participants with essential skills to convey messages about post-abortion care effectively to their audiences in different markets in Lilongwe.
Paragon Arts Director Philmon Kuipa said they were happy with the strides made through the project adding that through art, they are looking at addressing problems women face after undergoing abortion.
“We believe art can be used as an advocacy tool. There are indications that many women face problems after abortion. So, we are confident that these theatre groups will use their new skills effectively,” Kuipa said.
He said that stigma leads people to seek abortion instructions from unqualified practitioners.
Tafika Drama Group Director Evaristo Payesa described the training as crucial.
“We have acquired skills to craft messages and convey them effectively. Our group members are well-equipped, and we have already fashioned a production titled Aliyense Atengepo Gawo,” Payesa said.
He said they are also looking forward to working hand in hand with traditional leaders, parents and church leaders to ensure that messages reach the target group.
Some of the theatre groups that participated in the training included Tilitonse Cultural Troupe, Maonde Drama Group, Ambassador Cultural Troupe, Dzuwa Arts and Yofec Arts.
