Musicians unite in Peter Uyu Mlangeni’s fundraiser

Musicians on Monday came together at Sheaffer ICA Marquee in Lilongwe to entertain people with music vibes and raise funds for musician Peter Uyu Mlangeni’s medical expenses.

Mlangeni, famed for the hit ‘Wandikweza Yahweh’, is in dire need of support following a car accident he was involved in last year on his way from a concert.

Since the accident, which left him with serious injuries on his back, Mlangeni is finding it hard to make ends meet since he has been grounded.

This is why fellow musicians decided to put up a concert to raise funds for the Lilongwe-based musician, who in his healthy days was active in holding concerts across the country and even promoting fellow musicians’ shows.

The event on Monday, which fell on Independence Day holiday, attracted top artists such as Mlaka Maliro, Apostle Norman Phiri, Lulu, Great Angels Choir, Shammah Vocalz, Kamuzu Barracks, Kondwani Chirwa, Thocco Katimba, King James Phiri and The Marvelous Deeds.

The capacity audience was moved by the performances, gauging by the way patrons sang along to some of the songs.

Mlangeni, visibly emotive, made his way to the stage with the help of fellow musicians as the DJ played one of his recent songs.

The artist expressed gratitude for the support rendered to him during this difficult time.

“This overwhelming support means everything to me. I am grateful for the music industry’s unity and the fans’ love. The testimony song I released recently is a reflection of my journey and I am thankful for having a second chance at life,” Mlangeni said.

Currently, Mlangeni, the maker of songs such as ‘Wauka’ and ‘Tabwera Uwone’, is receiving medication twice a week.

One of Mlangeni’s fans, Chikondi Phiri, a resident of Area 36 in Lilongwe, expressed happiness with the turnout.

“Musicians did well to unite for this cause because the money raised will help him with medication. I have been following Peter Uyu Mlangeni’s music; his songs continue to preach to many people,” Phiri said.

Apostle Norman Phiri, one of the event’s organisers, hailed people for coming out in large numbers for the fundraising concert.

“The music industry has come together to help one of our own, and we believe Peter will receive the best medical care possible. We are also pleading with the government, companies and other non-governmental organisations to help him,” he said.

Phiri said the fundraising show was initiated to help Mlangeni receive the necessary medical attention outside the country as his condition requires specialised treatment.

Mlaka emphasised the importance of supporting one another in the creative industry.

“We must support each other. That is why we have performed at this event free-of-charge. Peter is our colleague and brother and we will stand by him in this difficult time,” he said.
