MERA denies fuel hike reports

Energy regulator – Mera has dismissed as fake a viral notice circulating on social media which claims that fuel prices will rise effective June 16, 2025.

The statement, purportedly signed by Henry Kachaje, Mera’s boss indicates that petrol, diesel and paraffin prices would spike from about K2,530 to over K5,233 per litre, K2,734 to K7,355 per litre and K1,910 to K2,345 per litre respectively.

However, the regulator has dismissed the document and urged the public to ignore the false announcement.

The fake notice comes as fuel scarcity continues to unsettle Malawi, with pumping stations across the country running dry leading to motorists waiting for hours or days to fill up.

The widespread shortages are causing long queues and forcing many to turn to black market suppliers.

In light of this, Edward Kambanje, social commentator, has advised government to devise ways of managing the continued low levels of foreign exchange reserves, which are making it difficult to import enough fuel to meet demand.

“Without adequate [foreign currency] reserves, fuel importers face difficulties leading to delays in replenishing stocks.”

He also emphasizes distribution infrastructure and the need for better long-term solutions.

Meanwhile, some sections of the society have blamed the scarcity on failure by government to manage the commodity courtesy of it’s lack of strategic planning to manage the worsening crisis.
