The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has expressed satisfaction with progress of the second phase of the voter transfer exercise, which commenced on March 5.
Mec Chairperson, Judge Annabel Mtalimanja, made the remarks during a tour of voter transfer centres in Luchenza Municipality, where officials inspected centres at Madalitso Lutheran Church Centre, Widzo Private Secondary School, Malo Primary School and Luchenza Primary School.
“The exercise is proceeding smoothly, with all centres open and those who wish to transfer their voting places doing so voluntarily.
“We have noted a high turnout of people who are participating in the exercise, with 110 people transferring their voting places at Madalitso Lutheran Church Centre and 104 at Widzo Private Secondary School on the first day,” Mtalimanja said.
Meanwhile, political analyst Victor Chipofya has expressed concern over the poor presence of political party monitors during the exercise.
Chipofya emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the electoral process, stressing that the absence of monitors from some political parties could lead to unnecessary tension.
“Political parties should deploy representatives and participate in activities throughout the electoral process,” Chipofya said.
The voter transfer exercise is part of Mec’s efforts to ensure a credible and inclusive electoral process, as outlined in its 2023-28 Strategic Plan.
