Innovations scholar Wilkins Mijiga has said the only way Malawi can truly break its cycle of poverty is by embracing and applying scientific innovations.
Mijiga, who is also Head of Client Coverage at National Bank of Malawi, was speaking in Blantyre on Wednesday evening at the closing of a Junior Academy of the Africa Drone and Data Academy under the Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must).
“We must not be lazy to embrace technology as a country. Without it, we cannot develop. Even in the course of civilisation, great empires were built using technology,” Mijiga said.
Malawi Institute of Technology Executive Dean Michael Zimba said the institution is structured to build a profile on innovations, patents and other tangible products.
“We are therefore engaging potential Must students early enough to motivate them to pursue science, technology, Engineering, arts and mathematics programmes as one way of achieving this vision. This cohort is between the ages of 12 and 17,” Zimba said.
