Call them globetrotters.
Madalitso Band, the duo of Babatoni player Yobu Maligwa and acoustic guitar star Yosefe Kalekeni, alongside their tour manager Neil Nayar left on Monday for Manchester, United Kingdom, for a performance at the Worldwide Music Expo (Womex) on Friday.
The musical group, from the outskirts of Ntandire in Lilongwe, which returned recently from their seventh Europe tour which saw them holding over 40 shows, is the only Malawian act performing at Womex.
Since 1994, Womex has been, a vital platform for showcasing the most exciting and innovative talent from around the world, establishing itself as the premier international gathering for global music professionals.
The event which celebrates its 30th anniversary and has over the years featured top artists runs from October 23 to 27 2024.
Sixty one acts from 44 countries will perform this year across seven stages.
“We are set to fly Malawi’s flag once again and looking forward to present Malawi’s authentic music,” Nayar, who is also a musician, said. He said apart from the Womex performance, they also have other gigs in UK starting on October 23 through to November 3 before returning home.
“We are also working on a documentary to ready this month end,” the group’s local manager Emmanuel Kamwenje said.
This group has this year also performed at the MTN Bushfire Festival in eSwatini.
Last year Madalitso Band successfully flew Malawi’s flag when it went on a world tour starting off in Europe before debuting in USA where they held over 20 gigs.
Madalitso Band has albums such as Fungo La Nyemba and Wasalala to their credit.
