Lilongwe Book Club gathers momentum

Lilongwe Book Club spearheaded by Kate Kujaliwa has made positive steps in its quest to help promote reading and writing culture in the country.

In a digital world where people no longer have interest in reading books, Kujaliwa, who is a seasoned facilitator, moderator and motivational speaker, decided to create the Lilongwe Book Club.

“We are not yet there but we will surely get there. Lilongwe Book Club is there to promote a reading culture. This was inspired by my own personal desire to stay consistent with reading while connecting with other passionate readers,” she said yesterday.

Kujaliwa said her wake-up call came during the 2024 Leadership Summit organised by Standard Bank where she moderated a session and that there was an emphasis of the power of reading in leadership.

She said one of her 2025 goals was to establish this club and that she was thrilled to have achieved it.

“After posting about the idea on Facebook, the response was overwhelming, with 20 members joining and many more on the waiting list,” Kujaliwa said.

She said for now, she is focused on building a solid foundation and putting proper structures in place before opening the club to more members.

“Our first reading assignment began as soon as the group was created and recently, we held our first meeting virtually due to fuel challenges. However, moving forward, we will priotise physical meetings to foster stronger connections and ensure members’ commitment,” Kujaliwa said.

She described the club as more than just a reading outfit but rather it is there to build a community of passionate readers who hold each other accountable and grow together.
