President Lazarus Chakwera Tuesday donated K421 million to support needy students in the country’s six public universities and to Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje District.
The funds were raised through his annual Charity Golf Initiative.
Of the total amount, K225 million was allocated to the public universities, with each receiving K37.5 million, an increase from last year’s K20 million.
Additionally, a K225 million cheque was given to the primary school for the construction of a new building after structures were destroyed by floods triggered by Tropical Cyclone Freddy in March last year.
“The reconstruction of the primary school symbolises our commitment to rising above adversity, rebuilding stronger and ensuring our children have a safe and conducive environment to learn and grow,” Chakwera said.
Addressing the university students, the President said he was committed to ensuring they have the necessary tuition and resources to succeed.
“This is not just a donation; it is an investment in our shared future, where every child has the opportunity to thrive and every community has the strength to overcome challenges,” he said.
He also praised First Capital Bank for its contribution of K100 million as the anchor sponsor of the initiative and thanked companies, organisations and individuals who sponsored various categories.
Japheth Kapalepale, representing the needy students from the Malawi University of Science and Technology, said the support would help them clear their school fees and cover basic needs.
On his part, Mpatsa Primary School Committee Chairperson Stainley Shawa also thanked Chakwera but added that the school requires additional resources to construct teachers’ houses.
Chairperson for the Presidential Charity Initiative Committee, Vizenge Kumwenda, announced that this year’s initiative aims to raise K500 million.
He has since invited companies, organisations and individuals to support the cause.
Meanwhile, Chakwera is set to leave the country today for Mozambique for a two-day official visit before proceeding to Zimbabwe for the 44th Ordinary Summit of Sadc Heads of State and Government, to be held on August 17.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says at the summit, Chakwera will engage with other regional leaders to advance Malawi’s drive to implement its agriculture, tourism and mining strategy.
