Insurance Institute of Malawi (IIM) has launched a debate competition to foster knowledge sharing and increase public awareness on the importance of insurance in the country.
IIM has partnered Old Mutual to organise a debate aimed at fostering knowledge-sharing among industry players.
The first-of-its-kind competition served as a platform for professionals to exchange ideas and address critical issues in the insurance sector. Six teams participated in the event, which took place in Blantyre on Friday.
IIM President Ruben Kamanga Kawelele pointed out that Malawi’s insurance penetration rate was at 3 percent, describing it as a pressing challenge requiring immediate attention. He emphasised that the debate, which primarily targeted youths, would spark conversations to demystify insurance and encourage more people to regard it as a vital tool for financial protection.
“We are collaborating with stakeholders to boost the penetration rate for the benefit of the country. Our mission is to bridge the knowledge gap and demonstrate how insurance can safeguard individuals and businesses against unforeseen challenges.
“We aim to create a well-informed public that understands the value of insurance in their daily lives,” Kawelele said.
After an intense intellectual contest, Britam Malawi emerged victorious in the inaugural insurance debate competition.
Britam’s Assistant Claims Manager Dennis Masasa said the win highlighted the organisation’s dedication to excellence and proficiency in the insurance field.
“This victory reflects our commitment to efficiency and professionalism in articulating insurance-related issues,” Masasa said.
Old Mutual Chief Risk Officer Sophie Nkhonjera said her company sponsored the event to strengthen professional relationships within the sector.
“We believe initiatives like these will not only improve knowledge within the industry but also inspire collaboration that can drive the sector forward,” Nkhonjera said.
