Illovo Sugar Malawi and Garda World have commissioned a $70,000 (about K122.5 million) potable water project in Traditional Authority (TA) Lundu, Chikwawa District.
Garda World Country Director Gani Kanchiputu said the donation was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
“We partnered Illovo and other partners after recognising that community members in this area lack safe and clean water. The water here is saline and unhealthy for community members. This is part of the sanitation programme we, at Garda World, are running,” Kanchiputu said.
Illovo Sugar Malawi representative Lengster Mlenga shared similar sentiments, expressing hope to extend similar initiatives to other areas.
“We are very happy for this project because one of our core objectives is to provide clean and potable water to the community. Many areas in the Shire Valley district consume salty water, which often impacts community livelihoods,” Mlenga said.
TA Lundu described the gesture as timely.
Phales Fambaone, a community member, echoed the chief’s remarks.
The multi-million Kwacha project has involved constructing a water treatment plant at Lengwe National Park and installing water kiosks in villages across the area.
