The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), an umbrella body for private sector players in the country, has reiterated the need for increasing investment and unlocking opportunities in the agricultural sector.
The chamber says as the sector remains the backbone of country’s economy, investing therein will help propel growth.
MCCCI Director of Membership Development Wezi Mungoni was speaking ahead of the 20th National Agriculture Fair (NAF) to be hosted from August 29 at the Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre
“We need to address gaps in access to resources, infrastructure, and markets to enable agricultural players to thrive,” she said.
She said this year’s fair will provide a platform for local and international delegates and exhibitors to connect, collaborate, and explore new business opportunities.
It will be hosted under the theme of ‘Driving Towards Export-Oriented Agriculture through Commercialization and Innovation.
Mungoni said the theme, aligns with the country’s economic goals of boosting productivity and positioning Malawi as a competitive player in international markets.
“This theme echoes the fact that while agriculture remains the most dominant sector of the Malawi economy, emphasis on agriculture as a business must be guaranteed to encourage stakeholders in the sector to adopt innovative approaches to production in order to realize increased output,” Mungoni said.
Mungoni said the 20th NAF will serve as a crucial platform for stakeholders to share experiences, exchange expertise, and establish linkages that will strengthen the agricultural value chain.
Commenting on the fair’s potential impact, Managing Director of Agriculture Tools and Chemical Supplies Mwai Odala Kukada, said he was optimistic about participating in the upcoming agricultural fair.
“The fair will offer opportunities to generate new leads, convert existing ones, and build strong relationships. We will have an opportunity to meet with prospects and customers to create, maintain and develop professional collaborations,” Kukada said.
