Fresh insights arise on power generation

Authorities have proposed the need to consider allowing companies to generate their own power arguing that this is key in increasing access to energy in the country.

This comes as the country is exploring innovative approaches to improve access to electricity.

Currently, the country’s electricity access rate stands at 25.9% a figure that authorities aim to increase to 70% by 2030.

Meanwhile a two-day Energy Policy Validation Workshop is underway in Lilongwe, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss the country’s energy policy.

Dr. Jacobs: The conversations are crucial.

Speaking to MIJ Online Dr. David Jacobs, a representative of the Centre for Petroleum and Customized Solutions (CPCS), highlighted the potential of wind and battery energy to reduce costs and expand electricity access in the country.

Jacobs noted that the decreasing cost of renewable energy technologies, such as wind and battery storage, presents an opportunity for Malawi to leverage these trends to improve energy access.

And on his part, Chris Chizonga, Head of Planning at the Ministry of Energy, expressed confidence that Malawi will reach its target of 70% electricity access by 2030.
