Chimbota Community takes on hunger alleviation drive

Chimbota Community Development Organisation has raided about MK10 Million which has been used under Za Njala initiative which is meant for hunger alleviation in the country.

The program was launched  in the wake of a report that highlighted that millions of Malawians have been experiencing hunger across many districts of the country.

Troughton: We are very committed.

“As an organisation, we felt that we needed to try to help some of the people who were suffering in the areas where we worked. We made a program to raise money to buy emergency food for those in the greatest need, mainly elderly people, orphans and those in places hit hard by the cyclone. We publicised our program as much as we could, and backed this up by organising a Big Walk from Blantyre to Thyolo. The Za Njala program was successful, and we were able to bring in over 10 million kwacha, and reach hundreds of needy people. Sadly, there are still very large numbers of people going to bed hungry, and those people still need our support,” says Kevin Troughton, Co-Director CCDO.

In the meantime, Troughton says they are due to implement a second round of Za Njala fund-raising.

“Last year, almost all of the money we raised came from supporters outside Malawi, so this year, we want to focus on Malawian businesses and organisations, to ask them to consider making a donation to our project. CCDO is very well placed to take on this work, as we have experience already of how to organise and run fund-raising and distribution. We are also known as an organisation with very good financial management, which is able to use money effectively, without waste, and reach people quickly with our help as the target is to raise 25 million kwacha. People can reach us through [email protected] or +265882899885 or +265888378359, “he said.
