Blackouts over by Jan 25– Egenco

Representatives of the Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) have indicated that, all things being equal, recent blackouts facing Malawians will end by January 25 2025.

This is the tentative completion date for rehabilitation works on two of its turbines, underway at its Kapichira power station in Chikwawa district. This came out on Sunday when Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola visited the power plant to appreciate progress on the rehabilitation works.

Egenco Chief Executive Officer Maxon Chitawo said repair on one of the turbines have been completed and was expected to be back on line by Monday evening.

“We are making tremendous progress on the repair works, by Monday this power station will be able to supply 97 megawatts to the National grid which should reduce the number of load shading hours. The second turbine will take at least another week to be ready but we believe we will be within the estimated time to conclude the repair works. By January 25 2025 the power station should be fully back,” Chitawo said.

Matola commended the company for the efforts applied to contain the power outages.

“I am impressed with the progress here. It is very good that all the repair works are being done by Malawians and right here in Malawi because we would have spent billions of Kwacha if this were to be done by expatriates elsewhere,” Matola said.
