Water boards challenged to cut non-revenue water loss

By Blessings Mpinganjira:

Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Elias Chimulambe has challenged water boards to be vigilant and come up with effective ways of reducing non-revenue water which he said is still a challenge.

Chimulambe made the remarks on Tuesday in Lilongwe during an African Water and Sanitation Association (Afwasa) training workshop which attracted water service providers in the country.

He said non-revenue water loss is a big challenge frustrating water supply.

“As government, we are working on rectifying challenges of quality water supply which include ageing of water infrastructures, leakages and inefficiencies in water networks,” Chimulambe said.

MBEWE—Workshop is crucial

Afwasa Vice President Silli Mbewe, who is also Chief Executive Officer for Lilongwe Water Board, said the workshop would assist water providers to improve service delivery.

“As Afwasa, our main goal is to build capacity in the water sector so that we can improve service delivery to our customers,” Mbewe said.

The workshop has attracted delegates from Ivory Coast, Ghana and Malawi, among others, and is being held under the theme ‘Optimising Drinking Water Networks Management to Reduce Non-Revenue Water Loss’.
