Civil rights activists are pushing for electoral reforms, specifically the ‘direct election’ of mayors and chairpersons for city and municipal councils in the country.
Currently, these officials are elected by council members, and not the general public.
The current set-up, according to Aloisious Nthenda,Team Leader, Center for Elections and Democracy, mostly leads to political manipulation and interference.
In a statement, Nthenda has since called for an amendment to the Local Government Act of 1998 to allow for direct elections.
Nthenda has indicated that the change would increase transparency, accountability, and democratic participation in local governance.
