As the number of people fleeing the conflict in Mozambique continues to grow, the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS), in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), have provided maize flour and cash to Mozambican refugees who are being held at Nyamithuthu Refuge Camp in Nsanje District.
The people have been provided with a 25 kilogramme (kg) bag of maize and K25, 000 cash per household.
The items and cash amount to K381 million.
MRCS Director of Programmes and Development Gloria Kunyenga appealed for more support to refugees.
“We have a budget of about K4 billion to support these people. So far, we have managed to source K1 billion and we have a gap of K3 billion,” she said.
Meanwhile, Senior Administrative and Operations Manager for the Department of Refugees in the Ministry of Homeland Security Hilda Katema has said they were open to partnerships.
“We, as government and the Department of Refugees, are grateful that partners have been responding positively to our appeal for support to these people, especially after noting that there were limited resources when we looked at the government basket,” she said.
One of the recipients, 31-year-old Sonia Paulino, said they would put the items to good use.
As of Saturday, the department had registered a total of 7,330 refugees in Nsanje.
It is yet to register those who are in Mulanje, Mwanza and Neno districts.
