The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has transferred Deputy Presidential Guard Commander Limibani Bekete from the State House to Mangochi Police Station to occupy the role of officer-in-charge (OC).
However, Malawi Police Service spokesperson Peter Kalaya has refused to comment on the issue, describing it as internal.
“The transfers in the Malawi Police Service (MPS) are internal management decisions which we do not discuss in public and the communication you are referring to, which you must have seen on social media, must be a leaked one,” Kalaya said.
However, The Daily Times has established that the security agency has also made other transfers, including relocating the incumbent OC for Mangochi, Morgan Dzonzi, to Chitipa Police Station.
On the other hand, Chitipa Police Station OC Joshua Mazengera has been sent to Northern Region Headquarters to be third in command as regional operations officer.
Other changes have been made at Lilongwe, Monkey Bay, Nkhata Bay, Chiradzulu and Karonga police formations, among others.
Meanwhile, security analyst Sherif Kayisi has said Malawians should expect more transfers before the elections.
“Looking at the trend in African politics, when a country is moving towards elections, in many cases there are shakings, mainly in government institutions. You know, during elections, there are centres at which OCs work hand-in-hand with district commissioners. So, one of the institutions that are affected during this period is the MPS,” Kayisi said.
In January last year, MPS transferred Richard Luhanga, who was Commissioner of Police for the South West Region, to Northern Region Headquarters in a similar position.
Luhanga swapped roles with Noel Kaira, who was heading the northern side.
