Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) has provided medical supplies worth K15 million to St John’s Hospital in Mzuzu City.
Recently, officials at the hospital said they were owing suppliers of pharmaceutical and other hospital supplies over K60 million.
They say the loans made it difficult for the facility to restock, prompting management to seek alternatives such as debt cancellation from suppliers.

Owing to this, PIL General Manager Martin Msimuko said they were bothered, hence they jumped in with the support.
Speaking after handing over the items, Msimuko said mission hospitals such as St John’s were more than just medical facilities; “they are sanctuaries where healing begins, both physically and spiritually”.
“We are deeply aware of the challenges faced by health care providers in underserved areas: limited resources, increasing patient needs and the ongoing struggle to provide quality care to all. It is our belief that access to essential medicine is a right, not a privilege and today’s donation is a small but meaningful step towards supporting your incredible efforts,” he said.
In her remarks, hospital director Jessie Chihana said the assistance had come at the right time when the supply of medicines at the hospital was very low.
“We are grateful for the support by PIL. This means a lot. They have brought medical suppliers which are very critical in times of surgeries, among others. As at now, the debt we had is now being reduced to close to half through well-wishers like PIL,” she said.
Fifty-four types of medical supplies were donated and included paracetamol suppositories, gauze rolls, cannulas, ciprofloxacin, catheters and multivitamins.
PIL is a consortium of four oil marketing companies in Malawi; Total Energies Malawi, Petroda Limited Malawi, Vivo Energies and Puma Energies.
