‘Women have solutions. They know most of the problems children, families and people in general go through. We have solutions.’
By Cathy Maulidi:
UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati Friday submitted her nomination papers formally expressing interest to contest on the position of president for the party.
Kaliati arrived at the party offices in Lilongwe in an open vehicle, mobbed her chanting followers.
Stepping out of the vehicle together with her husband, Kaliati proceeded into the party administrative secretary’s office to present her papers.
In an interview, Kaliati said she has been a politician in government system for over 16 years and has experience to run government affairs.
“I served as a Cabinet minister for over 16 years. I have worked with different ministers. I know how things in government work.
“I also know where the presidents I have worked with were going wrong and where they were doing well. I have all the experience and background of our economy. I will fix it,” Kaliati said.
She said her leadership would focus on five pillars of education, judiciary, agriculture, economy and digitalisation.
Kaliati said people should not look down upon her because she is a woman.
She said she is adequately educated and has received many leadership awards.
“Women have solutions. They know most of the problems children, families and people in general go through. We have solutions,” she said.
Kaliati presented her nomination papers after Dalitso Kabambe and Mathews Mtumbuka did so on Wednesday.
Notably, party president Michael Usi who also expressed interest to contest is yet to present his nomination papers.
Another aspirant, Newton Kambala, paid the K20 million nomination fee but is yet to present his nomination papers.
Kaliati paid K10 million in nomination fees because the party gave a discount of 50 percent to women and the youth to accord them a chance to take part.
UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala said the presentation of nomination papers would close by Monday next week.
