The National Planning Commission (NPC) has engaged an extra gear in its efforts aimed at making the Malawi 2063 agenda a reality.
The Malawi 2063 (MW2063) agenda is a development plan launched in 2021 with the aim of transforming Malawi into a wealthy, industrialized, and self-reliant country by the year 2063.
Speaking during an engagement with members of the southern region-based members of the clergy that the NPC organized today in Blantyre, Dr. Grace Kumchulesi, the commission’s Director of Development Planning said the faith leaders have a critical role to play towards the attainment of this Malawi 2063 development agenda.
“As you know, a significant population of Malawi belongs to a faith grouping. We therefore thought that these religious leaders would help us to increase awareness and ownership of the Malawi 2063.
“Most importantly, we expect that they will help us to encourage people they serve to take part in the development of this nation, especially with regards to promoting mindset change, in terms of how they approach worth creation and self-reliance, so that we can be a middle income economy by the year 2063,” said Kumchulesi.
Apart from increased ownership of the Malawi 2063 agenda, Kumchulesi added that the NPC is expecting a more positive attitude towards efforts that aim at achieving socio-economic development in the country.
However, for this to be achieved, Jenifer Mjuweni, the NPC’s Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Manager appealed to the members of the clergy to lead by example, if their flock is to follow whatever they are going to preach about Malawi 2063 Agenda.
“As members of the clergy, they need to lead by example by preaching positivity and responsibility to Malawians. Additionally, they need to encourage hard-work and innovativeness among their congregants. There is also need to discourage corruption, tribalism and regionalism that have been slowing development of the country,” said Mjuweni.
On his part, Reverend Brian Kamwendo, the Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs advised the faith leaders to take advantage of the respect they command from their flock to popularize the Malawi 2063 Agenda.
“The expectation is that the faith leaders, apart from preaching the message of salvation, will also preach messages of mindset change. It is only after the people that go to church and Mosques are transformed that we will achieve socio-economic transformation of the country as a whole,” said Kamwendo.
