
Parliament has passed the 2025/2026 national budget, set at K8.7 trillion.
The initial budget presented in the House was K8.5 trillion, but adjustments were made before its final approval.
The budget’s approval followed debate over the K67 billion allocation for State Residences, with Blantyre City South East MP, Sameer Suleman, proposing a reduction to K20 billion and redirecting K47 billion toward maize purchases.
During the session, Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda informed Parliament that additional funds had been allocated to key sectors, including the Ministry of Health, National Assembly operations, and infrastructure compensation under the Millennium Challenge Account top-up.
In the approved budget, the Ministry of Health has been allocated K396 billion, the Ministry of Agriculture has received K667 billion, and the National Assembly has been allocated K57 billion.
