Malawi saves $43 million with digital ID system

Malawi has saved $43 million by adopting Malawi’s National Digital ID system, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Fenella Frost has said.

She was speaking at the ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam) annual general meeting over the weekend in Mangochi.

She said using the system, the government streamlined its services, leading to reduced administrative inefficiencies.

“It [the system] stands as a cornerstone of Malawi’s digital evolution,” Frost said.

She, however, pointed to infrastructure gaps, energy supply constraints and limited connectivity, especially in rural areas, among constraints to progress.

Ictam President Clarence Gama said adoption of the system signifies that Malawi is heading in the right direction in allowing the ICT sector to make significant contributions to economic development.

“I feel like there is good progress. I think we are making an impact. We are seeing development partners supporting us and I feel that the future is going to be very bright as far as elevating Malawi through technology is concerned,” Gama said.
